More than 14 million people have fled their homes since the start of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.

“The number of (internal) displacements has reached 11 million. This is an increase of 200,000 since September,” IOM Director-General Amy Pope said in a statement. he said.

“Another 3.1 million people crossed borders to escape the conflict. In total, approximately 30 percent of Sudan’s population was displaced,” he added.

Describing the situation in Sudan as a “catastrophe”, Pope noted that “suffering is increasing day by day” and “almost 25 million people need help right now”.

The IOM chief called for “the guns in Sudan to be silenced” and drew attention to the cost of the displacement crisis.

Sudan has been devastated by deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023. According to a situation report released Oct. 14 by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, the deadly conflict resulted in: More than 24,850 deaths.
