Suspect in custody allegedly hits 68-year-old man outside Coney Island

DETROIT (WXYZ) — A suspect is in custody for allegedly attacking a 68-year-old man outside Galaxy Coney Island on Detroit’s west side.

“Oh my god, this place is getting dangerous.” Local resident Rosalind Pearson, who watched the video with 7 News Detroit reporter Faraz Javed, said:

The incident took place on Sunday, October 27, at 18.24.

The suspect is seen standing outside the entrance to Coney Island. It looks like he’s holding a pipe-like object and is patiently waiting for his victim.

A few minutes later, the 68-year-old man walks out of Coney Island, holding his travel bag in one hand and his drink in the other.

Within a few seconds, the suspect comes to the man and hits him with a pipe-like object in an unprovoked attack.

The suspect walks away while the man lies motionless.

“So if you stood in front of the bus, you would never think that something like this would happen,” Faraz asked.

“Of course I wouldn’t, especially when I get out of that coney island. I go there sometimes,” said Rosalind.

I also talked to the owner of Coney Island, and he said this was the first time something like this had happened on his property. He also shared the footage with public safety in mind and helped spread the message of always being aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are.

“Watching this makes you think you really want to be careful…” Faraz asked.

“Oh yeah, you gotta be careful. I don’t actually go out much. Unless I’m in the car or something,” said Rosalind.

While the 35-year-old suspect is in custody, Detroit Police announced that they are continuing to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, I talked to the victim’s family. They didn’t want to go on camera, but they told me he was in intensive care and had multiple injuries. He is expected to recover, but there is a long road ahead that will require weeks of treatment.
