Lafayette man faces multiple charges while arrested for shooting

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — While tracking a late September shooting, Lafayette Police arrested 18-year-old Demetrious Norwood Monday afternoon after witnessing him beating a woman in the front yard of a home.

On Monday, officers headed to the 800 block of South 20th Street to search for Norwood and announced probable cause to arrest him in connection with a shooting that occurred Sept. 30 in the 1200 block of Washington Street, police said in a news release. .

Police said they observed Norwood at the home on South 20th Street actively assaulting a female victim who police said had an active protective order against Norwood. Lafayette police Sgt. Shawn Verma said that at the time of the attack, Norwood was unaware that police were actively watching him as he attacked the woman outside the home.

Police immediately began intervening to prevent further injury to the victim, which led to Norwood forcibly taking the victim’s phone and fleeing on foot while armed with a firearm.

Police said they were able to catch Norwood as he fled the scene and the firearm was safely recovered.

Norwood is being held in the Tippecanoe County Jail on charges of domestic battery, violation of a protective order, robbery with a firearm, unlawful carrying of a firearm and criminal recklessness with a firearm stemming from the Sept. 30 shooting.
