Former Maryville church employee convicted in sexual battery case

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — A former employee of the Apostolic Christian Academy maryville Blount County District Attorney Ryan Desmond announced that he pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Joseph Kade Abbott was sentenced to six years in prison and will be placed on the sex offender registry, the prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday. Desmond added that Abbott’s sentence will be served 100%.

In January 2023, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office reported: Was investigating a sexual harassment case since June 2022 It involved Abbott and a 14-year-old victim. Abbott was arrested in North Carolina and subsequently transported to the Blount County Detention Facility, where a warrant was issued for his arrest for sexual battery.

Civil lawsuit filed months before his arrest He said he was working at the First Apostolic Church of Maryville at the time of the alleged crimes in 2022 and was studying at the Apostolic Christian Academy, a school operated by the church.

So was Abbott. Two counts of sexual assault filed by Sevier County official Court documents in that case stated that the victim Abbott was accused of having sexual intercourse with was at least 13 years old at the time of the alleged incident.
