British actor Sophie Turner says starring in new TV series Joan, about one of Britain’s most notorious burglars, is “very near and dear to my heart”.

The six-episode series is based on the real life of Joan Hannington, known as the “godmother” of the diamond heist. One of Hannington’s most notable coups was when he stole a handful of uncut diamonds from the jeweler where he worked and swallowed them all.

“I’ve never led a TV show before, and I feel like it’s a lot more challenging than a big movie like X-Men,” Turner told Harper’s Bazaar.

“There are a lot of people, a lot of opinions behind this. They make all the decisions and you say, ‘Yes, okay, whatever needs to be done.’

“Whereas I had so much say in Joan and she was so collaborative… it feels like I’m publishing something that’s very near and dear to my heart.”

Turner also revealed that she felt like her life was on “pause” until she returned to the UK from the US.

The 28-year-old star of Game of Thrones was living in America during her marriage to singer Joe Jonas, with whom she shares two children. In September, it was reported that their divorce was finalized and the separation, which had been acrimonious for a short time, was put to an end.

Talking about her life in the US, she told the magazine: “The first thing I did in every city we were in was find a British store and stock up on a month’s worth of chocolate.”

Reflecting on US politics, he added: “Gun violence, the rejection of Roe v Wade… it’s all piled up.”

“I’m so happy to be back,” he continued.

“It felt like my life was on pause until I got back to England.”

Turner will receive the performance award at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2024 on November 5.
