Millions of dollars in funding for key Montreal port commodities

The Port of Montreal has received C$12.5 million (US$8.99 million) from the Canadian government as part of the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF) for a project to redevelop and improve grain containerization operations at the Port of Montreal.

This project, with a total value of 17.98 million dollars, was carried out by DG CanEst Transit Inc., which specializes in the export of containerized grain to international markets via the Port of Montreal. It will increase and optimize the operational area at the terminal operated by and increase container storage capacity by 20%.

The port said in a statement that its grain business has grown by 78% over the past 10 years, among the highest rates among cargo categories in the eastern Canadian hub.

The latest funding complements the project by DG CanEst Transit Inc., which received financial support in 2022 to improve its existing infrastructure and purchase new equipment for its facilities.

The port said that the project will open the door to new export opportunities to markets in Asia, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.

The project includes the commissioning of the electrical substation after the demolition of the old electrical substation; work on the CanEst courtyard and storm water outlet; at-grade railway crossing renovation and work at the Port of Montreal Workshop 42 yards.

Montreal is an important center for grain processing. In addition to DG CanEst Transit, there is also a large grain elevator operated by Viterra. Millions of tons of annual grain volume passes through the port through these two infrastructures.
