Longtime Tom Petty Guitarist Mike Campbell Announces New Memoir Heartbreaker

You may not know Mike Campbell’s name, but you definitely know his work. Campbell was the founding guitarist for Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers when the band formed in 1976. He remained with the Heartbreakers until Petty’s death in 2017 and co-wrote such classics as “Refugee,” “You Got Lucky” and “Runnin’ Down.” A Dream.” Campbell also played on Petty’s solo records. During this time he worked extensively with major stars such as Stevie Nicks and Don Henley – he co-wrote “The Boys Of Summer” – and Joined Fleetwood Mac for their final tour. Now he’s written a book about all of this.

Mike Campbell will release it next year Heartbreakerhis new memoir, written with novelist Ari Surdoval. The book promises to chronicle Campbell’s entire career, which continues today. (He and his band Dirty Knobs just released their new album Tramps, Virgins and Misfits earlier this year.) Campbell says in a press release.

This is my book. This is the story of a poor boy in Jacksonville, Florida who fulfilled a dream through music. It’s a long journey of hard work, dedication and luck. Playing guitar and writing songs were my inspiration and purpose. This is a story of hope, redemption and gratitude; proof that dreams can come true if you believe in yourself and follow your truth.
