St. Thomas Accused of Choking and Punching His Ex-Wife in a Domestic Dispute. Charges Filed Against Thomas Man

ST. THOMAS — A man is facing aggravated assault charges after he reportedly attacked his girlfriend after she refused to sleep with him.

At the beginning of September, St. A St. John woman went to police to report that she had been assaulted by the man she had been with for the past six months.

The woman said that Mohammed Ahmed had to go to St. Petersburg to see her on September 5 because she sprained her leg. He told Thomas he wanted him to leave. When he got there he admitted that his story was not true. She then said she had to go see her mother, and the couple set off to meet her.

Along the way, the woman said Ahmad told her to go to the back road because he knew she wasn’t allowed to date or be seen with him. However, he reportedly saw his father in the Agave area and panicked. His then-girlfriend said they eventually decided to go back to his apartment, leaving him there and leaving again to see his mother.

When Ahmed returned home, the woman said she was lying on the couch. He tried to lie on top of her and when she tried to push him away, he began forcefully pulling her hair. She told police she warned her then-boyfriend that he was going to bite her for hurting her and told him to stop.

When he refused to stop, the woman said he actually bit Ahmed, pushed him and got up from the sofa. This angered her ex, who is said to have pushed her onto the bed, sat on top of her and started choking her with both hands while verbally abusing her and spitting in her face.

Even though she said she wanted to go home and could call a family member to pick her up, Ahmed convinced her to accompany him to the store to buy water. However, he was prevented from taking his bag with him when he left.

When they returned to the apartment, Ahmed asked his then-girlfriend to lie in bed with him. He refused and she was upset once again. The woman told police she hid the key under the bed and walked towards the door when she found it. Ahmed then reportedly ripped open the bag containing the woman’s belongings and threw a bottle of hair gel at her.

She reportedly began punching her ex-girlfriend’s arms, breasts, and stomach. When he threatened to call the police, police reportedly told him to go ahead because he would be dead by the time they arrived. He did not seek help from the police because he was worried about his safety.

Ahmed continued the attack, and when the woman threatened to report the abuse again, he reportedly began recording himself highlighting the scratches he had received in his self-defense attempts. When the woman was finally able to leave the apartment, she said she called a friend to report the situation as she walked away. While doing so, she told police Ahmed approached her in a vehicle, accused her of being dramatic and begged her to get in.

The woman said she turned down his requests and instead went to St. Louis with a friend. He said he waited until he found a boat to St. John.

After that incident, the relationship ended. The woman told police that Ahmed stopped returning her calls and instead started calling her from different numbers. He also began walking past her workplace and smiling at her, which she told police made him uncomfortable. The woman said she spent several nights away from home because she feared for her safety.

Ahmed surrendered to the VIPD Domestic Violence Unit on October 23. After refusing to give a statement, he was arrested and charged with simple assault, second-degree assault and disturbing the peace as domestic violence crimes. He was detained pending a hearing recommendation.

In court last Friday, Judge Paula Norkaitis found probable cause to plead guilty to all charges against Ahmad and set bail at $1,000. He now must report to the probation office by phone every week and is prohibited from using alcohol or other controlled substances. Ahmad is now also banned from illegally contacting his ex-girlfriend and must not visit her workplace unless he is doing legitimate business.

His next hearing will be held on November 8.
